PNO/Bill Evans, BSS/Scott la Faro, DRMS/Paul Motian.
Absolutely cool, amazing atmosphere, outstanding performance, great musicians. These are only a few of the ingredients that make this record unique. this is the 4th and last album to be released by the Bill Evans Trio, just before the death of Skott la Faro
in a car accident. Actually the record is Evans's tribute to him, since the album is nothing more than a sellection to feature La Faro's solos that trully honors one of the greatest Bassists of all times.
This is the fascinating album in general respects. Certainly here, Evans gives expression to the more romantic side of his nature, he reveals himself as an impressionist that enhances Jazz with western classical tunes. All it means is that, this album is more representative of the averall repertoir of the group than the previous ones. Although the album is technicaly and artistically equal with any of the Trio's other albums, I think this one is superior. Finally, it contains sellections than Evans has played and recorded, before La Faro joined him, it can serve as the most accurate index of the bassist's great contribution to the Trio. You see, La Faro's role was not only this of a timekeeper that during his solos would simply continue to keep time, only with a more intersting choice of notes. La Faro had completely freed himself from that constriction and it undoubtedly took a sensitive unobtrusive drummer like Paul Motian to help him do it.
Overall, one of the 10 greatest Jazz albums of all times, one of the 5 most atmospherical Jazz albums of all times and one of the 3 coolest Jazz albums of all times.
